Because of the nature of web design work and ability for it be completed remotely, the US has been infiltrated with “web professionals” from all parts of the globe. Also, with the down economy many people have turned to alternative jobs to help supplement their loss of income. Unfortunately this has led to the increase of amateur graphic artists that now advertising themselves as web professionals. Because most business owners are unaware of how websites are coded or the real skill that is needed to create a successful site they are often times fooled by these amateurs and end up with a website that ends up hurting their business instead of helping it. This being said there are still thousands of professional, high-end individuals and companies that are more than capable of helping you create a successful website for your business. Make sure to take your time when deciding on which company to go with as your website is your most valuable salesmen and is often times the first impression that many people will get of your company. With the continual advancement of the smart phone market you want to ensure that your site is viewable on all devices and platforms.
Here is a basic list of questions to ask when you are out shopping for a web design professional.
1. What is your personal website? If the person does not have one or tries to make up excuses for why their site is so bland then it’s time to walk away. If they are a true web professional they will have taken the time to make sure their own site is well designed and optimized.
2. Can you give me examples of your past work? If they are unable to give you at least 5 examples of past sites they have done they are either very new or they know their work will not impress you.
When you get examples of work it never hurts to contact the business to ensure that they really were responsible for the site and are not just using it as an example.
3. Ask the how long they have been in the industry and how they got started. If they can provide you with good information about their career and how they got into the industry they are most likely a professional. If they mention just starting out or recently switching careers you want to look for someone else.
4. How many projects is your team currently working on? Getting an idea of how busy a firm is tells you how talented they are as well as how much time they will actually be able to spend on your project. Too many projects and they probably wont be able to give your project the attention it deserves, too few projects and they probably don’t have a good product. Most web work comes from referrals, so a busy company most likely represents a quality product.
5. Ask them to explain to you how they plan to optimize your site to show up in the search results. In today’s world it is very important that your site be optimized for the various major search engines. This area of expertise is becoming increasingly important. Make sure that you ask for examples of their work, anyone can read about SEO and make you believe they know what they are doing, but actually having proven results is a different story.
6. Ask in which language they plan on coding the site. If they hesitate or tell you they use Dreamweaver this is a major red flag and you want to run away from this provider. With the advancement of programs that help code sites automatically there are now thousands of providers who know how to work photo shop and simply use these auto-coding programs to create sites. While visually they may turn out OK, the coding behind them is often times full of errors and will ultimately hurt your sites ranking.
